Electricity is the part of the house we trust the most and look at the least. As long as the lights come on, everything seems fine. But electrical faults usually start quietly: a socket that gets warmer than it should, a breaker that trips once a week, a smell you can’t quite place. These are worth a second look.
Signs that need attention
- A breaker that trips repeatedly, especially when a particular appliance starts.
- A socket or switch that feels warm, or has brown marks around it.
- Lights that dim or flicker when the AC or the heater switches on.
- A faint burning smell near the panel or a socket.
- A buzzing sound from a switch or from the electrical panel.
A burning smell, smoke or a socket that is hot to the touch is not something to watch for a few days. Switch off the breaker for that circuit and call an electrician the same day.
Why does the breaker trip?
A breaker that trips is protecting you. It usually means one of three things: the circuit is carrying more load than it was designed for, there is a fault in an appliance, or there is moisture or a loose connection somewhere in the wiring. Resetting it again and again without asking why is how small faults become big ones.
What is safe to do yourself
- Spread heavy appliances across different sockets, and avoid chaining adapters.
- Replace a burnt-out bulb with the power off.
- Know where your panel is and which breaker controls which room; label them if they aren’t.
- Keep the area around the panel clear and dry.
Anything that involves opening a socket, a switch or the panel belongs to an electrician. It is not only about skill; a small mistake can stay hidden in the wall for a long time.
Inside the unit, after the meter
We work on the electrics inside your unit after the meter: sockets, switches, lighting, fans, the intercom and the sub-panel. Faults in the main supply before the meter are for the electricity company. In Mawadda’s visits the inspection engineer checks the panel and the visible points and notes anything worrying in the report, with its price before any work.
