The scene repeats itself in many buildings: something happens at the entrance or in the parking area, everyone goes to check the recording, and it turns out the camera has been showing a blurry image for months, or the recorder stopped saving two weeks ago. Cameras rarely fail loudly. They just quietly stop doing their job.
The most common reasons
- Dust on the lens: in Madinah, a few weeks are enough to turn a sharp image into a foggy one, especially for outdoor cameras.
- A full or failing hard disk in the recorder, so it stops saving or overwrites too quickly.
- Power issues: a loose adapter, a power cut after which the system did not restart properly.
- Cables exposed to the sun that crack and let in moisture.
- A camera that was moved slightly and no longer points where it should.
A five-minute monthly check
Open the recordings and choose a random day from last week. Can you see it? Is the time and date correct? Is every camera showing a clear picture, day and night? Those three questions catch most problems before they matter.
Wipe the outdoor lenses gently with a soft dry cloth when they are within easy reach. For cameras on high walls or building facades, don’t risk a ladder; that is a job for someone with the right equipment.
A note on privacy
Cameras belong at entrances, corridors and parking, not looking into neighbours’ windows or tenants’ private spaces. And recordings should be kept only as long as needed and seen only by those responsible for them.
How Mawadda helps
Camera maintenance is part of our services: cleaning each camera per service, checking the recorder, and replacing or adding cameras when needed. For buildings, it can be added to the annual contract so it is done in the periodic visits.
