The Kitchen: Where Small Neglect Gets Expensive

The hood, the sink and the cabinets, and what each one needs from you

The kitchen is the busiest room in most homes. Water, heat, grease and steam meet there every day, often several times a day. So it is no surprise that many of the repairs we see start here, and that most of them began as something small that was easy to live with.

The hood: grease has nowhere else to go

Every time you cook, the hood traps grease in its filter. When the filter is saturated, the hood gets noisy, pulls less, and the grease starts settling on the cabinets and the ceiling. Clean or change the filter regularly; for a family that cooks daily, every few months is a reasonable rhythm. A hood that still struggles after a clean filter may have a duct or motor problem.

The sink: slow today, blocked tomorrow

A sink that drains slowly is almost always grease and food residue building up in the pipe. Don’t pour cooking oil down the drain, use a strainer, and run hot water after washing greasy dishes. Avoid pouring harsh chemicals repeatedly; they can damage older pipes and rarely remove the real blockage.

Under the sink: the place nobody looks

Open the cabinet under the sink once a month and look. A small drip from the tap connection or the drain trap can soak the cabinet base for months before anyone notices. The wood swells, the base softens, and what could have been a new washer becomes a new cabinet.

Cabinets and silicone

Loose hinges, doors that no longer close straight, and cracked silicone along the worktop and the sink are small things, but the silicone in particular matters: once it cracks, water gets behind the worktop and into the cabinets below.

What Mawadda does in the kitchen

The Comprehensive package includes cleaning the kitchen hood twice a year, changing its filter twice, and preventive drain clearing for the sinks. And in every engineer visit, we open the cabinet under the sink.
